Door zijn kritiek op de theologie en de kerk werd hij een pionier van de Reformatie. Maar toen keurvorst Frederik hem zijn mening vroeg in het godsdienstgeschil tussen Luther en de paus, schrok de beroemdste en geleerdste man van zijn tijd terug voor de verantwoordelijkheid van een beslissing. Erasmus wilde juist zijn onafhankelijkheid behouden en boven de partijen staan. Zweig publiceert zijn biografie over Erasmus in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw, in een tijd waarin Europa geteisterd wordt door autoritaire demagogen. Kort daarna zal ook de oorlog uitbreken.
