Hij schreef zijn gedichten niet, maar sprak ze uit, waarna ze door zijn 'discipelen' werden opgetekend. Daarbij was hij op zoek naar nieuwe beschermheren en naar leerlingen. Veel van zijn verzen getuigen van intense vriendschap, maar geven ook blijk van een diep verlangen naar eenzaamheid. Bashō’s poëzie is ook een confrontatie met het verleden: dichtende geesten van weleer zweven om hem heen op zijn reizen. Ze inspireren hem en brengen hem in verrukking, maar hij schrikt er niet voor terug om ze te parodiëren – soms heel brutaal. Deze verzameling – de eerste vertaling van ál zijn haiku’s in het Nederlands – doet recht aan Bashō’s uiteenlopende stemmingen, aan zijn humor, zijn liefde voor de natuur en zijn radicale vernieuwingsgeest.
